Nazarin (played by Francisco Rabal) is a priest who has devoted everything to God. He abandons the comfortable conditions of his church and willingly goes to a remote village with a very poor environment to preach. However, Nazarin's piety does not earn him the respect he deserves; after helping a prostitute named Andara (played by Rita Macedo), who committed murder, he is scorned by the faithful and expelled from the church. Yet, Nazarin does not give up his faith. Andara's friend Beatriz (played by Marga López) requests Nazarin's blessing for her sister's sick child, and a miracle occurs—the child's illness is miraculously cured. Thus, Andara and Beatriz become followers of Nazarin. Beatriz's ex-boyfriend Pinto (played by Noé Murayama) is extremely jealous of Nazarin and spreads ruthless slander against him.
