Released on November 8, 1991, this is 'Mikadoroid', the first installment of Toho Video's Cinepack. At the end of World War II, Japan was facing defeat. In that context, the Imperial Army was secretly researching a weapon, the android "Jinra-go." Although Jinra-go was erased from history with Japan's defeat, one unit remained asleep in a buried research facility after bombings. Now, half a century later, Jinra-go revives beneath Tokyo! What do two young people stumbling into this underground labyrinth encounter? A mysterious man who has been lost as an incomplete android and unable to age—what does he desire? This work, limited to a narrow location and timeframe, results in a dense narrative, resembling a one-night-only surreal nightmare. The design of Jinra-go was handled by illustrator Asuran. With its steam locomotive-like vintage lines, Jinra-go initially appears humorous and clumsy, but the nightmares and madness it conceals provide it with a strange sense of persuasion, resulting in a striking finish. Additionally, the "Type 100 Short Machine Gun改 'Type B' Terra Gun" designed as a special weapon for Jinra-go is modeled after real guns used by paratroopers of the time, making Jinra-go's backstory feel even more authentic. Various prop guns, such as the Type 14 Nambu pistol and Type 96 light machine gun, also showcase realistic action scenes to tighten the narrative. The film is directed by Tomoaki Haraguchi, known for his special makeup work. This film is a project that Haraguchi has developed over many years and marks his directorial debut.
