The story takes place in a misty, fantastical city, where the strange Doctor Gruff (played by Daniel Emilfork) is tormented by his inability to dream. In his agony, he instructs his clone (played by Dominique Pinon) to kidnap the children of the city in order to steal their dreams through a bizarre machine. However, all the beautiful dreams that reach him turn into nightmares. One day, A (played by Ron Perlman), who is naturally large and strong, finds his younger brother kidnapped by the strange doctor. To rescue his brother, the kind A teams up with Miette (played by Judith Vittet), a member of an orphan thieving group, to engage in a deadly battle of wits and strength against the doctor. Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet uses his trademark imaginative flair to build a lavish dreamscape that is a mix of good and evil, yet where goodness ultimately prevails.
