Mark (Sam Neill) finds that his wife Anna (Isabelle Adjani) has left home without any explanation. He initially suspects that Anna is having an affair with a man named Heinrich (Heinz Bennent), but discovers that Heinrich is also searching for the long-missing Anna. Mark then hires a private detective to investigate. However, as clues present themselves one by one, the truth becomes almost unbelievable for Mark and others.
