The beautiful middle-class woman Séverine (Catherine Deneuve) has a happy family. Her husband Pierre (Jean Sorel), a handsome and gentle surgeon, earns a good income, but he can never satisfy his wife's physical needs. Bound by her status, Séverine can only find pleasure in fantasizing about being abused and humiliated. Unable to bear it any longer, she goes to a brothel and sells her body, earning the title "Belle de Jour" because she can only sell her body during her husband's consultations (from 2 PM to 5 PM).
