Set in 19th century England, Hobson (played by Charles Laughton) runs a shoe shop and works hard to raise his three daughters Maggie (Brenda De Banzie), Alice (Daphne Anderson), and Vicky (Prunella Scales). In the blink of an eye, the three girls have reached marriageable age, but the stingy Hobson is not prepared to pay for their dowries. Maggie falls in love with the cobbler Willie (John Mills), and despite Hobson's strong opposition to this ill-timed romance, the independent and strong-willed Maggie marries Willie. With Maggie's help, Willie's business flourishes, quickly becoming Hobson's strongest competitor, while Maggie also helps her two sisters solve their dowry dilemmas.
