Veteran John Rambo (played by Sylvester Stallone) returns home from Vietnam to a hometown that feels foreign to him. From the moment the local sheriff (played by Brian Dennehy) lays eyes on the veteran, he begins to criticize Rambo harshly, even bringing him to the police station for unwarranted humiliation. Unable to endure the abuse, Rambo retaliates against the police and escapes. The sheriff gathers a large number of officers to pursue Rambo, who flees into the wilderness. Rambo fights back using the guerrilla warfare tactics he mastered during the Vietnam War. He robs a military weapons transport and returns to town to burn down stores; neither the law nor weaponry can stop him. Colonel Trautman (played by Richard Crenna), Rambo's commanding officer from the Vietnam War, appears and persuades Rambo to lay down his arms.
