The story tells of wild birds being captured, sold, and released by trappers again and again, struggling for survival within limited freedom. Women try to survive in a male-dominated society, facing equally pitiable fates that are beyond their control. Growing up in the mountains with her grandmother, the protagonist often watches birds soaring, being captured, released, and dying, until one day her mother takes her to live in a city apartment. In the cramped and restless city, mother and daughter rely on each other, but the mother is merely a wild bird yearning for love yet suffering from harm. To make a living, she becomes a "hotel girl" serving men; for love, she endures violence and injuries. The mist of the mountains traps the birds, while the lament of the city imprisons the soul. Freedom is just an illusion; the world is ultimately a larger cage, and the mother and child are merely seeking a moment of refuge.
