After World War II, Susanna returns to the ruins of Berlin from the concentration camp, only to find that her apartment is occupied by someone else, namely Dr. Hans Mertens. He is deeply affected by the war and has become an alcoholic. Susanna asks him to leave, but he doesn't want to, so they end up sharing the apartment and even begin to develop feelings for each other, leading to love. This slightly lifts Mertens' spirits until he learns that Captain Brückner is still alive and living in Berlin. Captain Brückner was his superior during the war, who had ordered the killing of over a hundred innocent lives, including many women and children, on Christmas Day...The film is ranked sixth among the greatest hundred German films.
