In German-occupied Paris during World War II, Jewish playwright, director, and theater manager Lucas Steiner (played by Heinz Bennent) is hidden in the basement of the Montmartre theater by his wife, Marianne Steiner (played by Catherine Deneuve), as he plans to escape to a non-occupied area. As an actress, Marianne must take on the responsibilities of managing the theater, hiring male actor Bernard Granger (played by Gérard Depardieu) to rehearse Lucas's new play.
