In German-occupied Paris during World War II, Jewish playwright, director, and theater manager Lucas Steiner (played by Heinz Bennent) is hidden in the basement of the Montmartre theater by his wife, Marianne Steiner (played by Catherine Deneuve), as he plans to escape to a non-occupied area. As an actress, Marianne must take on the responsibilities of managing the theater, hiring male actor Bernard Granger (played by Gérard Depardieu) to rehearse Lucas's new play. With the German front expanding, Lucas’s escape gradually becomes a mirage, forcing him to listen to daily rehearsals through the heating pipes in the basement, secretly providing guidance... The film won ten César Awards, including Best Film, Best Director (François Truffaut), Best Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Actor (Gérard Depardieu), Best Actress (Catherine Deneuve), Best Music, Best Set Design, and Best Sound, and received nominations for Best Supporting Actor (Heinz Bennent) and Best Supporting Actress (Andréa Ferréol).
