The arrival of a guest (Terence Stamp) completely transforms the life of a family. Although this guest has no identity, no history, and not even a name, everyone in the family is seduced to madness by him. The wife (Silvana Mangano), the husband (Massimo Girotti), the daughter (Anne Wiazemsky), the son (Andrés José Cruz Soublette), and the maid (Laura Betti) all succumb to the entanglement of soul and desire that the guest brings.
