The American nuclear submarine USS Montana goes missing while tracking an unidentified object in the deep sea. Bud (Ed Harris), the foreman of the high-pressure diving rig Deepcore, receives orders to assist Captain Coffey (Michael Biehn) in the rescue mission. Unexpectedly, Bud's estranged wife, oil company engineer Lindsey (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), joins them. The trio's rescue team dives to the edge of the abyss where the submarine vanished but finds no survivors aboard. Panic ensues as they discover an unknown creature lurking in the depths. After a series of crises, Captain Coffey dismisses warnings and believes this is a Soviet conspiracy, deciding to launch a nuclear missile extracted from the submarine at an unknown enemy. Bud and Lindsey team up for a desperate fight. In a critical moment, Bud risks his life to save Lindsey and descends into the abyss to disarm the missile's detonator. After completing the task, Bud’s oxygen is nearly depleted, and just then, the sea monster reappears.
