On March 3rd, 1860, during the seventh year of the Ansei era, Japan, under the control of the Tokugawa Shogunate, witnessed a significant event that changed history. Outside the Sakurada Gate of Edo Castle, amidst snowflakes falling like goose feathers, the shogunate's senior official, Ii Naosuke (played by Nakamura Kiyoo), was assassinated by 18 ronin from the Mito Domain, an event known as the "Sakurada Gate Incident." The bodyguard, samurai Shimura Kingo (played by Nakai Kiichi), feels a sense of failure but cannot seek death. Due to his parents’ suicide on his behalf, the Hikone Domain orders Kingo to hunt down the five escaped ronin and present their heads as an offering at Ii's grave to atone for his failure. Over the long span of the next thirteen years, Japan undergoes tremendous changes, including the success of the Meiji Restoration and the abolition of the domains, yet none of this seems to pertain to Kingo, who, dressed in outdated samurai attire, obsessively pursues the whereabouts of the ronin. Unbeknownst to him, the last remaining ronin, Sahashi Jubei (played by Abe Hiroshi), has already assumed the name Naoyoshi and survives at the bottom of society as a coachman. Two tragic individuals are destined to reunite… This film is adapted from the short story of the same name by Asada Jiro.
