After receiving the news of her father’s (played by Tai Bao) passing, daughter Ah Mei (played by Wang Liwen) returns from Taipei to her hometown to assist her brother with the funeral arrangements. Under the strict direction of the master of ceremonies, she participates in the mourning rituals, while nagging women fold paper lotus flowers, and sun-baked canned towers collapse... Ah Mei is constantly caught between the absurd rural funeral customs and the strange connections among the locals, which leave her both laughing and crying. Memories of her past with her father flood her mind, and the estrangement between them as adults slowly begins to close as she revisits these memories. After the tedious and lengthy funeral, which is filled more with laughter than tears, Ah Mei returns to her busy life in the city. A few months later, while passing through Hong Kong airport, she instinctively thinks of buying a "Huang Changshou" cigarette for her father, only to suddenly realize that he is no longer there, and the tears she never shed finally burst forth... This film is adapted from the first-prize work of the "Lin Rong San Literary Award," directed personally by the essayist Liu Zijie.
