For a long time, playwright David (John Cusack) has been living a frustrating life, and the artist's unique aloofness fills him with disappointment towards the corrupted and chaotic theater world of today. To please his mistress Olive (Jennifer Tilly), a gangster has taken an interest in David's obscure script and wants to invest, with the condition that David must have Olive play the lead role. Although Olive's nagging personality and poor acting skills drive David crazy, he painfully yields in the face of profit. Thus, a strange production crew is born. The script's flaws, conflicts among the actresses, and the male lead's increasingly overweight frame leave David in despair, but he is surprised when Olive's bodyguard Cheech (Chazz Palminteri) inadvertently showcases impressive screenwriting talent. With Cheech's help, the rewritten script unexpectedly achieves great success; meanwhile, Cheech's pathological obsession with the script he crafted and the chaotic relationships within the crew thrust David into another dilemma...
