In 1972, after the American military's defeat and withdrawal from Cambodia, New York Times correspondent Sydney (played by Sam Waterston) remained in the country to continue his reporting. Cambodian Pandy (played by Haing S. Ngor) is Sydney's local translator and assistant. With Pandy's help, Sydney narrowly escapes death several times. The two form a deep friendship amidst the chaos of war. In 1975, the Khmer Rouge occupied Phnom Penh. Sydney managed to escape unscathed, but Pandy was arrested due to not having a passport and began a hellish existence. During forced labor under the Khmer Rouge, Pandy witnessed the regime's brutal violence and endured inhumane treatment. In 1978, as the Vietnamese army invaded Cambodia, Pandy seized the opportunity to flee to the Thai border, where he reunited with his old friend Sydney, who had been searching for him. This film won three Academy Awards at the 57th Academy Awards in 1985: Best Supporting Actor, Best Cinematography, and Best Film Editing.
