This film is based on true historical events and tells the legendary story of "advertising for the salvation of the nation" during the presidency of Chilean military dictator Augusto Pinochet. Pinochet's military government suppressed dissent with brutal oppression, leading to widespread discontent. However, faced with international pressure, they were forced to hold a referendum, allowing the people to decide whether Pinochet should continue for the next eight-year term with a "Yes" or "No" vote. Opposition leaders enlisted a young advertising executive, René Saavedra (played by Gael García Bernal), to promote their counter-campaign. Did the voting war ultimately achieve victory through advertising? Director Pablo Larraín has long focused on Chile's political landscape, creating this final installment of the "Pinochet Trilogy" following "No" and "The Club." The film was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 85th Academy Awards in 2013 and was shortlisted for the Tokyo Grand Prix at the 25th Tokyo International Film Festival in 2012. Director Pablo Larraín won the Golden Carriage Award at the 65th Cannes Film Festival in 2012.
