The film tells the brutal story of the African civil war and the yearning of the African people for peace and humanity through the perspective of a teenage girl named Komona (played by Rachel Mwanza). At the age of 12, Komona's village is destroyed by rebels, and her parents are killed. Komona is kidnapped by local rebels and forced to become a child soldier. At 13, she is not only trained as a killing tool by a cruel rebel commander but also becomes his sex slave. Amid daily pain and fear, Komona falls in love with an older boy with white hair (played by Serge Kanyinda), whom she calls the "magician." At 14, Komona makes a desperate attempt to escape back to her hometown, finally freeing herself from rebel control. The lead actress Rachel Mwanza won the Best Actress award at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival (Silver Bear) in 2012. "War Witch" was also nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 85th Academy Awards in 2013.
