In what appears to be a glamorous international metropolis, in corners where sunlight cannot reach, tenacious and humble lives strive to survive. Gaunt and shabby Billy (played by Thomas Haden Church) is one of the homeless army; he is taciturn and hopeless. A diary he randomly finds, marked with burn scars, provides him with some solace. The diary seems to be written by a girl without parents, who expresses her joys and sorrows through writing, unknowingly becoming Billy’s confidante. During this time, a group of wayward youths drives to the homeless gathering spot, offering $50 to watch them fight. Billy, who earns some money, has no intention of saving and chooses to squander it. He also meets a veteran named Little Toe (played by Thomas Haden Church) who lost his legs in the war; to spare his feelings, Billy spends money to have Little Toe read the girl’s diary, which reminds this battle hero of his painful war experiences. Winter arrives, and the homeless, fighting for survival like wild dogs, seek even the slightest dignity and hope...
