In 1923, in Ōdate City, Akita Prefecture, Japan, a heavy snowfall occurred, and the Kondo family's purebred Akita dog gave birth to puppies, which were gifted to the head of the prefectural civil engineering department, Manse. He passed one of the dogs to Professor Ueno Heitaro (played by Tatsuya Nakadai) of the Tokyo Imperial University for training. Ueno's only daughter, Chizuko, was overjoyed, while Ueno and his wife showed concern. Later, Chizuko (played by Mako Ishino) fell in love and found herself pregnant with her boyfriend's child. The boyfriend made a special visit. During their conversation, the boyfriend, filled with trepidation, expressed his intention to take responsibility for Ueno's daughter and proposed a wedding without delay. Hearing this, Ueno's anger turned to joy. After Chizuko's marriage, Ueno poured all his affection and care into the puppy, naming it Hachi.
