In 1931, following the "September 18 Incident," the three northeastern provinces fell to enemy forces. During this time, Tian Han, who was actively engaged in anti-Japanese theatrical activities in Shanghai, met with northeastern exiled students such as Qi Baishan and became friends with these passionate youths, jointly devoting themselves to the anti-Japanese national salvation movement. During the "January 28" Shanghai War, Tian Han deeply felt that the theatrical stage was insufficient for expressing the war effort; at the urging of Xia Yan, he and others resolutely picked up cameras and used film as a weapon to create a series of patriotic films. At the same time, his patriotic songs continued to emerge. When news arrived of his friend Qi Baishan and his volunteer army companions sacrificing their lives for the country, Tian Han, in grief and anger, wrote the theme song "March of the Volunteers" for the film "Sons and Daughters of the Storm," inspiring the Chinese people to engage in the war against aggression. This is the national anthem of the People's Republic of China that is sung to this day.
