Doctor Barbara (played by Nina Hoss) attempts to escape from East Germany to West Germany but fails, and is consequently transferred from Berlin to work at a rural hospital. At first, she does not interact with those around her until doctor Andre (played by Ronald Zehrfeld) approaches her. A girl named Stella is brought to the hospital suffering from meningitis, and under Barbara's attentive care, she gradually recovers. However, the girl is then sent to a labor camp in East Germany because she is pregnant. On the other hand, Barbara is actively preparing for her next escape plan with the help of her boyfriend. Although she periodically faces searches from East German police, she remains impeccably hidden. Another male patient who has attempted suicide is admitted to the hospital, and Barbara believes he needs surgery. Andre decides to perform the surgery on Saturday night, requiring Barbara's assistance, which coincides with the time she plans to escape. Just as she is about to leave home, Stella escapes from the labor camp and finds her... Director Christian Petzold won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 2012 Berlin Film Festival with this film.
