This film is adapted from the renowned playwright Tennessee Williams' play of the same name. Blanche DuBois (Vivien Leigh), a fading Southern belle, seeks refuge with her sister in New Orleans after being dismissed from her position as a tutor due to "improper" behavior. Her sister lives in a rundown apartment, and her husband Stanley (Marlon Brando), the son of Polish immigrants, is coarse, brash, and an alcoholic. Raised in privilege with a traditional Southern education, Blanche is somewhat neurotic and views Stanley as uncouth. Stanley, in turn, perceives her delicate sensitivity as a threat to his authority and often verbally abuses her out of contempt. In this environment, Blanche's tragedy unfolds bit by bit.
