This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by American author Walter Kirn. Ryan Bingham (played by George Clooney) works for a company in Omaha, Nebraska, that specializes in providing layoff services to other companies, spending over 300 days a year traveling across the country to fire others, making airports his home. During a routine layoff trip, Ryan meets the businesswoman Alex (played by Vera Farmiga), and they fall in love at first sight, content with maintaining a casual sexual relationship. Meanwhile, Ryan's new college intern Natalie (played by Anna Kendrick) gains the favor of the company president and enthusiastically promotes a reform to conduct remote layoffs through video conferencing. Ryan opposes the change but has to take Natalie around to familiarize her with the business... The film received six Oscar nominations including Best Director, Best Picture, Best Actor (George Clooney), Best Supporting Actress (Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick), and Best Adapted Screenplay, along with six Golden Globe nominations including Best Director and Best Picture, and won the Best Screenplay award from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
