The Earth is about to be struck by an asteroid, and there are only three weeks left until the apocalypse. People are spending their final days in their own ways; some are busy breaking up, others are spending time with family, and some are fulfilling last wishes. Doug (played by Steve Carell) is left alone when his wife runs off immediately. He happens to encounter his neighbor Penny (played by Keira Knightley), who is crying under the window after missing her flight home. They meet and connect. Penny returns many mistakenly delivered letters to Doug, and he discovers one from his first love written months ago. Feeling guilty, Penny decides to help Doug meet his first love one last time.
