Som Tum is one of the traditional dishes from northeastern Thailand and is also one of the most popular Thai dishes among foreign friends. It is made primarily from shredded papaya, mixed with chili, lime juice, fish sauce, peanuts, and dried shrimp, hence the Chinese translation "凉拌木瓜丝" (Cold Shredded Papaya). This is also one of my favorite Thai dishes. The film tells the story of a big but timid foreigner who transforms into a red "monster" after eating Som Tum, resembling a combination of the Hulk and Popeye. The movie clearly targets not the local Thai audience but rather Western blonde-haired, blue-eyed tourists. It combines Muay Thai, freestyle fighting, and comedic elements, reminiscent of a Jackie Chan movie. I wonder if Hong Kong or Taiwanese film companies will be interested in this movie?
