In September, as autumn arrives, it seems that the loneliness of theater director Caden (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman) is also present. After an accidental injury, Caden becomes trapped in endless medical consultations, repeatedly visiting various specialists. On the other hand, his wife Adele (played by Catherine Keener), who creates miniature oil paintings, grows increasingly distant from him, and the cold, awkward atmosphere at home deepens Caden's self-doubt, even though his productions achieve tremendous success. Caden maintains ambiguous relationships with a woman working in theater and an actress, and after his wife abandons him, he attempts to find a way to improve his mental state through these two women, but he ultimately fails.
