The legendary comedian and director Takeshi Kitano is well-known in Japan and around the world, but behind this fame lies the contributions of his mentors and friends. He studied under the little-known but once-prominent stage comedian Senkaku Chisaburo, receiving help from many contemporaneous actors, and carving out his own path to fame. Ultimately, he realized that gaining recognition and success came at a great cost: the sacrifice of those who once helped him succeed. The story is set in the mid-1960s in Asakusa, an area of Tokyo known for its disorder. In search of a better life, Takeshi Kitano dropped out of university and found a job at the Asakusa Franceza, a venue famous for striptease and comedy performances, soon becoming an apprentice to the legendary comedian Senkaku Chisaburo. Senkaku was a comedy master, with students like Hachiro and Kinichi Hagimoto, who had no interest in television and only believed in live performances.
