The legendary comedian and director Takeshi Kitano is well-known in Japan and around the world, but behind this fame lies the contributions of his mentors and friends. He studied under the little-known but once-prominent stage comedian Senkaku Chisaburo, receiving help from many contemporaneous actors, and carving out his own path to fame. Ultimately, he realized that gaining recognition and success came at a great cost: the sacrifice of those who once helped him succeed. The story is set in the mid-1960s in Asakusa, an area of Tokyo known for its disorder. In search of a better life, Takeshi Kitano dropped out of university and found a job at the Asakusa Franceza, a venue famous for striptease and comedy performances, soon becoming an apprentice to the legendary comedian Senkaku Chisaburo. Senkaku was a comedy master, with students like Hachiro and Kinichi Hagimoto, who had no interest in television and only believed in live performances. Under Senkaku's guidance, Kitano worked diligently, honing his craft, and eventually achieved his dream of becoming a successful comedian. However, as household televisions became increasingly popular, live comedy gradually declined.
