Chiron (Ashton Sanders) grows up in loneliness as his mother Paula (Naomie Harris) is addicted to drugs and unable to care for him. His small frame often makes him a target for bullying. By chance, he meets drug dealer Juan (Mahershala Ali), and his home with girlfriend Teresa (Janelle Monáe) becomes Chiron's second home. Kevin (Jharrel Jerome) is Chiron's only friend, and their feelings gradually deepen beyond friendship. To hide his sexuality, Kevin, under peer pressure, violently confronts Chiron, after which they never see each other again. Years later, Chiron receives a call from Kevin, and they finally decide to confront their true feelings for each other.
