The story follows Seymour, who after obtaining a strange flower that feeds on human blood, is willing to sacrifice himself to win the favor of customers and the heart of his beloved. However, as he gains fame and fortune, Seymour discovers that he can no longer control the growth of this monstrous plant, and his life is in danger. Caught between conscience and ambition, Seymour ultimately awakens, leading to a battle between good and evil. The film was later adapted into an Off-Broadway musical composed by Alan Menken, which in turn was adapted into a film.
