During the 19th century American-Mexican War, Army Captain John Boyd, due to his cowardice, was dispatched by the military to a desolate outpost in the Nevada mountains, living a boring life with a group of inferior soldiers. Later, a Scottish man named Avelis burst into the camp, claiming that he had originally come here with a group, but encountered a blizzard along the way and took refuge in a cave. Under the harsh conditions of hunger and cold, they resorted to cannibalism, and only Avelis managed to escape this maddened cave. Upon hearing the news, Captain Boyd led a team to investigate the cave, only to find that Avelis was a cannibal. The story appears to be a lowbrow bloody horror film, but it is actually quite serious, offering profound reflections on the themes of war and survival. Director Antonia Bird's fast-paced handling is neither dragged out nor tedious, and the latter part even evokes a sense of black comedy. The two main actors, Guy Pearce and Robert Carlyle, both deliver distinctive performances.
