Beautiful blonde nurse Miranda Wells (played by Rosamund Pike) works at a hospital where she has a harmonious and friendly relationship with her colleagues. On a predetermined date for blind dating, Miranda is violently assaulted by delivery guy William Finn (played by Shiloh Fernandez), resulting in immense physical and emotional trauma, causing her life to deviate from its normal course and leading to a trembling hand condition. At her lowest point, Miranda chooses to write to William, who is serving time in prison, hoping to meet him.
