Due to the construction of a dam by a power plant, the Cahulawassee River is set to become a lake and disappear. Four friends who love adventure and nature—Lewis (Burt Reynolds), Ed (Jon Voight), Bobby (Ned Beatty), and Drew (Ronny Cox)—plan to go rafting on the Cahulawassee River for the weekend. They find a guide in a desolate town that is about to become a lake and finally arrive at the riverbank. After a brief preparation, they begin their adventure. The next morning, Ed, who tries to hunt, comes up empty and feels bored compared to the strong and agile Lewis. He and the overweight Bobby go downriver to scout ahead, but they encounter two armed strangers who take control of them and insult them. Lewis arrives and kills the strangers. The four hurriedly escape, but at this point, the river turns treacherous, with deadly rapids and rocks making their adventure a deadly journey...
