The chivalrous swordsman Jia Yi (played by Jacky Cheung) learns by chance that the Ghost King is about to harm the world, so he heads to the Ancient Sword Manor, hoping to use the manor's unparalleled skills to eliminate the Ghost King in its infancy. Along the way, Jia Yi encounters the runaway bride Gu Mengxue (played by Joey Wong), and feelings begin to grow between them. However, in the end, Gu Mengxue leaves Jia Yi and becomes someone else's wife. The master of the Ancient Sword Manor, Yan Ying, tells Jia Yi that the Ghost King has forcefully married a woman, and that woman is none other than Gu Mengxue. Jia Yi learns the truth, but it is too late. He travels to the underworld in an attempt to rescue Gu Mengxue, resulting in a fierce battle with the Ghost King. During the fight, Jia Yi is seriously injured, but fortunately, he is saved by the fox spirit Qing'er (played by Michelle Yeoh), which spares his life. After regrouping, Jia Yi performs the Chasing the Sun technique, hoping to turn back time and change history.
