Once, Santiago (Spencer Tracy) was the best fisherman in the area; it was impossible for him to come back empty-handed after challenging the sea. However, now Santiago has grown old, and months of no catch have made him realize the situation is dire. Facing doubts and ridicule from his peers, Santiago appears calm on the surface but is secretly anxious inside. To catch fish, Santiago ventures into unfamiliar waters, where he encounters a "big one." He engages in several rounds of struggle with the creature and eventually catches it. Soon, the blood in the water attracts a swarm of sharks, and to protect his prize and uphold his honor, Santiago engages in a life-and-death battle with the sharks.
