This film depicts several days in the life of a writer, Harmon (played by John Cassavetes), and his sister Sarah (played by Gena Rowlands). Most of the movie's plot takes place in Harmon's home as they struggle in life: Harmon leads an extremely disheveled life, surviving on alcohol, cigarettes, and a series of short-term relationships with women—whether from work or from nightclubs. He is also a very incompetent father, leaving his 12-year-old son in a hotel room and even teaching him to drink. Meanwhile, his sister Sarah is getting divorced from her husband due to her erratic behavior, and her daughter wants to live with her father, causing her immense pain and pushing her to the brink of a mental breakdown. At the end of the film, Sarah leaves Harmon's home to be with another man, while Harmon steps forward to bid farewell to the audience, also saying goodbye to his life.
