Sita (played by Nandita Das) is a beautiful young woman who, under her father’s arrangement, marries a wealthy but indifferent video store owner. Without love, married life becomes a torment for Sita, as her husband is too engrossed in his study of Chinese martial arts to show her any interest. The only source of comfort for Sita is her sister-in-law, Rohta (played by Shabana Azmi), who, like Sita, is trapped in an unhappy marriage. Rohta has been unable to bear children despite many years of marriage, while her husband has become absorbed in spiritual pursuits, neglecting her for years. Their similar experiences provide these two women with a wealth of common topics, allowing them to help and support each other. Over time, this connection gradually shifts from a spiritual bond to a physical one.
