Ray (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor) is an outstanding FBI agent. His partner Jessie (played by Julia Roberts) and prosecutor Claire (played by Nicole Kidman) are his close friends, forming an unbreakable triumvirate, combating evil and prevailing in their pursuits. However, one day, Jessie's daughter is brutally murdered, which brings Jessie immense emotional trauma, and the trio gradually goes their separate ways. Thirteen years later, the sensational murder case has faded into obscurity, but the harm it caused has not diminished at all, and the murderer remains at large. By chance, Ray discovers some new clues that lead him to reopen the investigation of the case from years ago.
