In a beautiful world of ice and snow with stunning northern lights, a mother and daughter live together. The mother (played by Michelle Yeoh) was informed by a shaman at her birth that she was an ill-fated person, destined to bring misfortune to those around her. In her youth, she lost her lover in war and was raped by a villain. The strong mother devised a plan to push the villain into an abyss. She found a baby girl and escaped with her to a remote area in the distant north, where many years later, the baby girl has grown into a beautiful young woman. Facing harsh natural conditions, the mother and daughter survive through life-and-death challenges together. However, after the mother saves a man, their once harmonious relationship begins to change. The man initially has an ambiguous relationship with the mother, but later falls in love with the daughter and decides to take her away from this desolate area. The mother has a habit of braiding her daughter's hair; one day while the man is out, the mother strangles her daughter with a braid and skins her face to wear it as her own. When the man returns home and goes to bed, he discovers that the face lying beneath him is terrifyingly grotesque, and a chilling wail echoes across the icefield...
