In the Republic of China era, Miss Pan Xiyue (played by Jin Ning) is haunted by demons. In desperation, she invites the Taoist master Yin Tianqiu (played by Cui Dongchen) to exorcise the demons and tricks the fox demon into a marriage with a paper effigy. Zhang Shaofeng (played by Gao Guangze), who is betrothed to Pan Xiyue, uses the guise of a visit to secretly rendezvous with Pan's wealthy family’s concubine Meiniang (played by Zhao Zhiyan). When caught, he hides in a law chamber and accidentally breaks the seal of the demon Jiumo (played by Xu Shaoqiang). After gaining his freedom, Jiumo retreats into the mountains to cultivate and plan his revenge, inadvertently taming the fox demon, who he instructs (played by Jia Xiaolong) to wreak havoc on humanity by draining the life force of young girls.
