Liu Jialing and Mao Shunjun both work in the Major Crimes Unit. Liu is a newly promoted senior inspector, acting impulsively, while Mao has lost faith in the police force. Their informant, Luo Meiwei, discovers a black market arms deal while seeking payment for her services, but she is afraid of getting involved and unwilling to take risks, causing Liu to push her relentlessly. Luo discusses this with her superior, but he instead instructs her to act as bait to draw out the gang leader. Luo angrily scolds the two for valuing lives so lightly. Liu feels deeply troubled, and Mao, knowing Luo is in danger, is determined to protect her. However, in the end, Luo is killed, and before her death, she hands over clues to Mao. Under the investigation led by Mao, Liu, and their superior, they confront the gang leader, leading to chaos where their superior is taken hostage, allowing them to experience the brink of death for the first time. In the end, Mao and Liu join forces to rescue their superior and recover the lost gun, leading to positive changes in their lives and careers from that point on.
