Alonzo (Denzel Washington) is a seasoned African American detective for the Drug Enforcement Administration, with excellent investigative skills and a keen sense for drug cases. He is referred to as the "Magic Eye." One day, a new colleague, Jake (Ethan Hawke), joins Alonzo's department, and Jake follows Alonzo into the dark corners of the streets, discovering the city's bizarre nature while gradually witnessing Alonzo's morally ambiguous investigation methods. Alonzo, although a detective, operates on the edge of legality. He adheres to the principle of "fighting fire with fire," first arming himself: confiscating criminals' drugs to consume personally, ordering Jake to follow suit at gunpoint, and even having an unusual relationship with drug dealers. On the other hand, he fiercely protects Jake, the young recruit, creating a complex character that leaves Jake unable to fully grasp his enigmatic superior.
