Seven-year-old Fanis (Georges Corraface) lives with his family in Istanbul, where his grandfather owns a spice shop, a place where Fanis spends his childhood. His grandfather teaches Fanis various lessons about life, the universe, and geography by drawing analogies with the properties of spices. Young Fanis falls in love with a Turkish girl named Saniye, who plays with him. However, soon after, political turmoil disrupts their happy family, and Fanis and his parents are expelled to Athens due to their Greek nationality, while his Turkish citizen grandfather is allowed to stay. Time flies, and now in his forties, Fanis has become a respected astronomy professor, yet he feels lost in life, as if something is always missing—the spice. After leaving his hometown for 35 years, he still longs to return to his childhood home and desire to see that wonderful girl again...This film is based on the true experiences of the writer and director Tassos Boulmetis.
