Reagan Thomson (Michael Keaton) is a former Hollywood movie star who became famous for portraying the superhero Birdman. Now in his fifties, his glory days are long gone, and unwilling to fade into obscurity, Reagan shifts his focus to Broadway, attempting to regain attention and respect by adapting Raymond Carver's "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love." Unfortunately, the reality falls far short of his ideals: the production has budget constraints, a terrible lead actor gets hit on the head by a light, his daughter Sam (Emma Stone), who just got out of rehab, is sharp-tongued, and the drama critic is ready to pounce. Additionally, the up-and-coming Hollywood star Mike Shiner (Edward Norton) is brought in to save the show but often interferes with the painstakingly crafted play created by Reagan.
