Paris (played by Robert Cummings) and Drake (played by Ronald Reagan) are childhood friends who, despite their vastly different personalities, share a close bond. Paris falls in love with Cassandra (played by Betty Field), the daughter of Dr. Alexander (played by Claude Rains), but Cassandra is confined at home by her strict father, which causes her great distress. Meanwhile, the flirtatious Drake meets a woman named Louise (played by Nancy Coleman). When Drake goes to propose to Louise, he is rejected by her family due to his womanizing ways. Subsequently, Drake encounters Randy (played by Ann Sheridan); although Randy comes from a very poor family, the two quickly fall in love.
