Produced by Shochiku and Fuji Films, the story is based on the "Okayama Incident" that occurred in 1938. A 22-year-old man named Mutsuo Tokui from Nishikamo Village in the Tomata District of Tsuyama City, Okayama Prefecture, killed thirty people with a shotgun and a samurai sword in under two hours, and ultimately fled into the mountains to commit suicide. This incident set a record for mass murder in a very short period, both in Japan and worldwide.
