Hannah (Sarah Polley), a solitary factory worker, struggles with hearing impairment and always wears a hearing aid. Clumsy in social interactions, she has devoted herself to her job and finally gets her first vacation after several years. Unexpectedly, she decides to forgo this rare opportunity and voluntarily goes to an offshore oil drilling platform to care for Joseph (Tim Robbins), a man who has been severely burned and is temporarily blind due to an accident. In the isolated, desolate drilling platform, two lonely souls haunted by painful pasts develop a subtle intimate relationship intertwined with secrets and truths. Under Hannah's careful attention, Joseph gradually opens up, while Hannah breaks her silence to share her tragic experiences with him.
