Yue Opera. During the Three Kingdoms period, Sun Quan and Liu Bei formed an alliance to resist Cao Cao. Liu Bei borrowed Jingzhou from Eastern Wu to gather and rest his troops, which deeply worried Zhou Yu, who specifically sent Lu Su to Shu to demand the return of Jingzhou. Lu Su returned empty-handed, saying Liu Bei requested a few more years’ grace and promised to return it after seizing Xichuan. Zhou Yu was furious and devised a plan; he personally led 50,000 troops straight to Jingzhou under the pretense of helping Liu Bei to capture Xichuan, but actually intended to stealthily attack Jingzhou and capture Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang. Zhuge Liang saw through Zhou Yu’s scheme and decided to be courteous before taking military action. When Zhou Yu led his troops to the outskirts of Jingzhou, the Han army lined up to welcome him, and Zhuge Liang personally offered a toast to Zhou Yu. Zhou Yu threw his wine cup to the ground and ordered his soldiers to capture Zhuge Liang. Zhuge Liang explained the righteousness of the alliance against Cao Cao, advising Zhou Yu to withdraw his troops quickly. Zhou Yu refused and ordered the Wu army to besiege Jingzhou. A fierce battle ensued outside the city, Zhou Yu suffered a great defeat and retreated to Lu Huadang, where he fell into an ambush set by Zhang Fei. Zhou Yu’s horse got stuck in the mud, and he pleaded for mercy from Zhang Fei to save his life. Zhou Yu fled in disgrace and withdrew to Baqiu, where he died of grief and anger. Zhou Yu's wife, Xiao Qiao, was devastated upon hearing the news of his death. Sun Quan issued an edict to avenge Zhou Yu, and Xiao Qiao, along with the generals of Eastern Wu, demanded to mobilize forces immediately. Only Lu Su advised caution regarding a possible alliance between Cao Cao and Liu Bei and urged careful consideration of military actions. Zhuge Liang crossed the river to offer his condolences. Zhang Zhao ordered a thousand soldiers to ambush around the mourning hall, using Xiao Qiao dropping a wine cup as a signal to capture Zhuge Liang. When Zhuge Liang entered the mourning hall, aware of the ambush, he instructed Zhao Yun to be extra vigilant. He knelt, crying before Zhou Yu's memorial tablet, presenting a sacrificial text praising Zhou Yu's merits. Xiao Qiao attempted to pick up a wine cup several times but hesitated when Zhao Yun watched her closely. In the end, Xiao Qiao secretly picked up a cup of wine and smashed it to the ground, but it was caught by Lu Su with his robe. Moved by Zhuge Liang’s weeping recount of past events, Xiao Qiao found it hard to decide on life and death. In a moment of crisis, Zhao Yun urged the strategist to leave, but Zhang Zhao blocked him. Zhuge Liang appealed to Zhang Zhao about the greater righteousness and stated that Cao Cao had long desired to take revenge for the Battle of Red Cliffs; if both our families were to fight amongst themselves, wouldn’t it benefit the fisherman? At that moment, it was reported that Cao Cao was leading hundreds of thousands of troops, threatening Jiangdong, making the military situation extremely urgent. Zhang Zhao quickly apologized to Zhuge Liang and sought advice on how to resist Cao Cao. Zhuge Liang emphasized that they should adhere to the oath made at Red Cliffs, firmly maintain the alliance between Sun and Liu, and work together to resist Cao’s forces. Zhang Zhao was overjoyed and invited Zhuge Liang to the inner hall to discuss strategies against Cao Cao.
