In 2006, Mumbai, India. Indian youth Jamal Malik (played by Dev Patel) is just one question away from winning 20 million rupees. How did he do it? A: He cheated; B: He got lucky; C: He is a genius; D: It was all written in the stars. This is the life version of the TV quiz show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire." Jamal Malik, having already won 10 million rupees, is arrested by the police for fraud, and under harsh interrogation, he reveals the truth behind his winnings — he knows the answers, but he only knows these! Coming from the slums, Jamal's childhood was tough, and together with his brother Salim and girl Latika (played by Freida Pinto), they experienced decades of changes in India. Each previous question seems like a fragment of Jamal's memory, bringing back his recollections of family, love, and life. Now, Jamal must clear his name of criminal suspicion while also saving his love for Latika. Can Jamal remain calm and choose the right answers when faced with the choice between money and love?
