The story takes place after the Civil War. Veteran Howard (James Stewart) returns from the front lines, hoping to return to his hometown and live a peaceful life. However, upon arrival, he discovers that the land that should have belonged to him has been encroached upon by others. To redeem his land, Howard must pay a hefty price. Rhodeless, Howard decides to become a bounty hunter to earn some extra money, targeting the notorious outlaw Ben (Robert Ryan). During the process of capturing Ben, Howard meets two helpers, Roy (Ralph Meeker) and Jesse (Millard Mitchell), who mistakenly believe Howard is a detective and are willing to help him unconditionally. However, after they capture Ben, the two realize Howard's true identity and demand a share of the bounty.
